Simply Wall St

Lerøy Seafood Group ASA (OB:LSG) shareholders might be concerned after seeing the share price drop 10% in the last quarter. But in stark contrast, the returns over the last half decade have impressed. In fact, the share price is 203% higher today. We think it's more important to dwell on the long term returns than the short term returns. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean it's cheap now.

While markets are a powerful pricing mechanism, share prices reflect investor sentiment, not just underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over half a decade, Lerøy Seafood Group managed to grow its earnings per share at 13% a year. This EPS growth is lower than the 25% average annual increase in the share price. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that's hardly shocking given the track record of growth.

The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).

What About Dividends?

When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. It's fair to say that the TSR gives a more complete picture for stocks that pay a dividend. As it happens, Lerøy Seafood Group's TSR for the last 5 years was 254%, which exceeds the share price return mentioned earlier. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!

A Different Perspective

We're pleased to report that Lerøy Seafood Group shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 11% over one year. And that does include the dividend. However, that falls short of the 29% TSR per annum it has made for shareholders, each year, over five years. Potential buyers might understandably feel they've missed the opportunity, but it's always possible business is still firing on all cylinders. Before forming an opinion on Lerøy Seafood Group you might want to consider the cold hard cash it pays as a dividend. This free chart tracks its dividend over time.
