Did Nam Tai Property's (NYSE:NTP) Share Price Deserve to Gain 84%?

Nam Tai Property isn't a profitable company, so it is unlikely we'll see a strong correlation between its share price and its earnings per share (EPS). Arguably revenue is our next best option. Generally speaking, companies without profits are expected to grow revenue every year, and at a good clip. As you can imagine, fast revenue growth, when maintained, often leads to fast profit growth.

In the last 5 years Nam Tai Property saw its revenue shrink by 17% per year. Even though revenue hasn't increased, the stock actually gained 13%, per year, during the same period. It's probably worth checking other factors such as the profitability, to try to understand the share price action. It may not be reflecting the revenue.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Nam Tai Property's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for Nam Tai Property shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 101%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

Nam Tai Property shareholders are up 4.2% for the year. Unfortunately this falls short of the market return. It's probably a good sign that the company has an even better long term track record, having provided shareholders with an annual TSR of 15% over five years. It's quite possible the business continues to execute with prowess, even as the share price gains are slowing.
