DISH's API Open to Third Parties

Zacks Equity Research

DISH Network Corp. (DISH) has allowed third-party application developers to build programs on the company’s application programming interface (API). This will enable users to operate Dish’s popular Hopper devices more easily.

Allowing the third-party developers to access Dish Network’s API will benefit its customers in many ways. It will help them to change channels, get alerts, record their favorite shows and create their own playlists.

Higher proliferation of smartphones and tablets coupled with enormous success of the third-party applications available on Apple Inc.’s (AAPL) iOS and Google Inc.’s (GOOG) Android platform, has encouraged Dish to combine Thuuz Sports’ apps with its API. This allows users to easily control their Hopper devices from any smartphone or tablet based on the iOS or Android platform.

Thuuz Sports applies real-time analytics and social signaling to inform users about the upcoming sporting events. So, by combining this app (available on any android or iOS based smart devices) with Hopper, DISH Network’s customers can easily skip to games that they are more interested in. Moreover, the viewer can also record live games.

DISH Network’s Hopper DVR device has already gained popularity. So, by implementing the open source platform concept, which is followed by most smartphone and tablet developers, the company may prevent subscriber loss. Moreover, DISH Network is setting a trend for other pay-TV operators.

Currently, DISH Network – the second-largest satellite TV operator in the U.S. after DIRECTV (DTV) – carries a Zacks Rank #4 (Sell).
