Disney Animation has announced the studio's next film will be Raya and the Last Dragon, an original movie from Crazy Rich Asians writer Adele Lim.

Raya, which is set for release in 2020, will be a fantasy epic adventure with themes inspired by Southeast Asia.

The new animation was announced at Saturday's (August 25) Walt Disney Studios panel, introducing Raya as "a lone warrior from the fantasy kingdom of Kumandra who teams up with a crew of misfits in her quest to find the Last Dragon and bring light and unity back to their world".

Big Hero 6 and Frozen artists Paul Briggs and Dean Wellins will make their directorial debuts on the film.

Those present at the D23 Expo, including Digital Spy, were given a first look of the new animation, viewing an exclusive three-minute clip. Disney also announced two new members of the voice cast: Awkwafina (Crazy Rich Asians), who plays Sisu, the Last Dragon, and Cassie Steele, who voices the lead character Raya.

Also during the panel, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Chief Creative Officer Jennifer Lee revealed more details about Frozen 2.

Lee, who's directing the sequel with Chris Buck, introduced two new cast members in Sterling K Brown, who voices Lieutenant Destin Mattias, and Evan Rachel Wood, who voices Queen Iduna, Anna and Elsa’s mother.

Raya and the Last Dragon will arrive in cinemas in November 2020.
