Does the Stock Market Close Early for Memorial Day?

Kyle Woodley, Senior Investing Editor, Kiplinger.com
The stock market is closed on Memorial Day, but it's open as usual the Friday before Memorial Day. However, the bond market closes early ahead of the holiday weekend.

Memorial Day is the traditional start to summer, and investors will be able to enjoy swimming pools, sandy beaches and backyard cookouts along with everyone else thanks to a market holiday on Monday. Both the stock market and the bond market are closed on May 27 for Memorial Day. The bond market also closes early the Friday before Memorial Day to allow traders to get a jump on holiday travel. Regular trading resumes on Tuesday.

Holiday observations

When a holiday falls on a weekend, market closures are dictated by two rules:

  • If the holiday falls on a Saturday, the market will close on the preceding Friday.
  • If the holiday falls on a Sunday, the market will close on the subsequent Monday.
