Does Tencent Music Entertainment Group (NYSE:TME) Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

·4 min read

It's only natural that many investors, especially those who are new to the game, prefer to buy shares in 'sexy' stocks with a good story, even if those businesses lose money. But as Warren Buffett has mused, 'If you've been playing poker for half an hour and you still don't know who the patsy is, you're the patsy.' When they buy such story stocks, investors are all too often the patsy.

In the age of tech-stock blue-sky investing, my choice may seem old fashioned; I still prefer profitable companies like Tencent Music Entertainment Group (NYSE:TME). While profit is not necessarily a social good, it's easy to admire a business that can consistently produce it. In comparison, loss making companies act like a sponge for capital - but unlike such a sponge they do not always produce something when squeezed.

How Fast Is Tencent Music Entertainment Group Growing?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. I, for one, am blown away by the fact that Tencent Music Entertainment Group has grown EPS by 51% per year, over the last three years. While that sort of growth rate isn't sustainable for long, it certainly catches my attention; like a crow with a sparkly stone.

I like to take a look at earnings before interest and (EBIT) tax margins, as well as revenue growth, to get another take on the quality of the company's growth. The good news is that Tencent Music Entertainment Group is growing revenues, and EBIT margins improved by 6.1 percentage points to 14%, over the last year. Ticking those two boxes is a good sign of growth, in my book.

Are Tencent Music Entertainment Group Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$44b company like Tencent Music Entertainment Group. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Indeed, they have a glittering mountain of wealth invested in it, currently valued at CN¥1.8b. I would find that kind of skin in the game quite encouraging, if I owned shares, since it would ensure that the leaders of the company would also experience my success, or failure, with the stock.

Does Tencent Music Entertainment Group Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

Tencent Music Entertainment Group's earnings per share have taken off like a rocket aimed right at the moon. That sort of growth is nothing short of eye-catching, and the large investment held by insiders certainly brightens my view of the company. The hope is, of course, that the strong growth marks a fundamental improvement in the business economics. So to my mind Tencent Music Entertainment Group is worth putting on your watchlist; after all, shareholders do well when the market underestimates fast growing companies.
