Domestic violence campaigner ‘beaten to death by ex-boyfriend’

A woman in Dallas who dedicated her life to tackling domestic violence was allegedly beaten to death by her former boyfriend, US court documents have revealed.

Nathaniel Mitchell, 34, is accused of fatally beating Donna Alexander, 36, after breaking into her home.

Mr Mitchell has been charged with murder, burglary with the intent to commit aggravated assault, and burglary with the intent to commit assault in the death of Ms Alexander.

“The children locked themselves in their rooms. They were afraid,” Ms Alexander’s sister, Lauren Armour, told a local CBS station.

“He broke in her bedroom window because he was beating on the door and they would not let him in”.

Mr Mitchell initially told Grand Prairie police Alexander fell in the shower but the charge said he hit her “with an unknown object” or “pushed her” causing her to “strike an unknown object” resulting in her death.

Police said he was charged with aggravated assault hours after the incident due to the severity of the injuries but that charge was later upgraded to murder after Mr Alexander was pronounced dead. She died at the hospital three days after the attack.

Ms Alexander was the owner of the Anger Room – a service which allows people to break things as a way to relieve stress.

The Anger Room was featured on an episode of US reality TV show Real Housewives of Dallas, and was meant to “provide an alternative to seeing a ‘head doctor’ or talking it out when you are having a bad day,” according to its website.

“At the moment the Anger Room is no longer in business until further notice until we can sort out how to let her legacy live on,” a statement from the company said on Facebook earlier this month.

“Her legacy is bigger than the Anger Room. She taught people how to love unconditionally,” Ms Alexander’s best friend, Torria Bradford, said.

Ms Alexander hoped to expand the Anger Room to other cities in Texas and on the East Coast.

“My sister made an impact. She had a big heart. She just wanted to help everybody,” Ms Armour, said.

The victim’s sister said Ms Alexander had recently kicked Mr Mitchell out of her home, telling The Daily Beast that “no matter how much she tried to get away, he always ended up back in her life”.

“Her very last prayer request was for her assailant. His heart was not right and she prayed that his heart would soften,” Brian Carter, the Associate Pastor at Crossroads Christian Church, previously told the local CBS station.

Mr Mitchell remains in custody at the Tarrant County Jail.

Police said he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison if he is convicted.
