Virginia utility seeking regulatory OK for $1.3 billion power plant; opposition expected
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Dominion Virginia Power is asking state regulators to approve a gas-fired power plant it wants to build in Brunswick County.
The state's largest utility, which is a unit of Dominion Resources Inc., is due before the State Corporation Commission on Wednesday. The company says the proposed $1.3 billion power plant near Lawrenceville would create more than 500 construction jobs and more than 40 full-time jobs.
If approved, the Richmond-based company expects the power station would be completed by the spring of 2016. The initial increase to the typical residential customer would be 83 cents starting Sept. 1.
The Virginia chapter of the Sierra Club opposes the new plant and says the company should look to cleaner energy, such as wind and solar.
