Dow Jones Closes at New High, Tech Stocks Lower

U.S. market indexes were mixed for the day. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21891.12 for a gain of 60.81 points or 0.28%. The S&P 500 closed at 2470.30 for a loss of -1.80 points or -0.07%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6348.12 for a loss of -26.55 points or -0.42%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher at 10.46 with a gain of 0.17 points or 1.65%.


For the month, the Dow Jones gained 2.55%, the S&P 500 gained 1.96% and the Nasdaq Composite gained 3.41%.

Monday's market movers

The Dow Jones closed at a new high on Monday and tech stocks were lower. The Pending Home Sales Index was the only major economic report for the day. It increased 1.5% to 110.2.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains:

Home Depot (HD) 1.03%

Chevron (CVX) 0.99%

Verizon (VZ) 0.96%

Goldman Sachs (GS) 0.77%

In the broad market, financial stocks led gains and materials stocks led losses. Technology stocks in the S&P 500 were lower with the S&P 500 technology sector down -0.45%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1425.14 for a loss of -4.12 points or -0.29%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 863.62 for a loss of -1.38 points or -0.16%. The Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8619.83 for a loss of -36.00 points or -0.42%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9689.39 for a gain of 14.27 points or 0.15%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1760.68 for a loss of -1.66 points or -0.09%; the S&P 100 Index at 1088.94 for a loss of -0.59 points or -0.05%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1462.32 for a loss of -1.31 points or -0.09%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1368.57 for a loss of -1.01 points or -0.07%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 664.55 for a gain of 2.17 points or 0.33%.
