The Dow Jones Industrial Transportation Average (Dow Jones Global Indexes: .DJT) closed up 1.8 percent Tuesday, its best day since March 1.
In intraday trade the index had climbed 2 percent, tracking for its best day since December 2016, when the index rose 2.53 percent. But the Dow transports gave up some gains in the close.
The index was boosted by shares of airline companies United (UAL) and JetBlue (JBLU), as well as truck and tractor rental company Ryder (NYSE:R) all closing nearly 3 percent higher or more. United closed up 3.47 percent, its best day since December 2016.
Despite Tuesday's gains, Dow Transports are still down more than 3 percent for this month, with its worst monthly performance since June 2016 when the group dropped more than 4 percent.
The Dow Jones Industrial Average (Dow Jones Global Indexes: .DJI) was last up nearly 1 percent.
