The Brief: Getting gray hair is a part of a life. But I’m nowhere near ready for that chapter. I began sprouting a couple of grays 8 or 9 years ago and would pluck them out with tweezers as they grew in (against my mom’s and hairdresser’s better judgment). The rate they grew in was so infrequent that my plucking method was a quick and easy solution.
Fast-forward to the present day, and my grays are now growing at a rate I almost can’t keep up with. This realization wouldn’t be so traumatic if I hadn’t just recently been diagnosed with alopecia areata incognita — a rare kind of hair loss that, quite frankly, has been devastating for me. The silver strands of tinsel strewn through my (now thinning) center part is like adding insult to injury: of the hair that isn’t falling out, my deep brown hair is going gray.
Gone are the days of plucking; after 16 months of battling alopecia, I wouldn’t dare pluck a single hair out of my head. The alternative — dyeing my hair — seemed to be the best route. My plan? Get my roots colored professionally a few times a year at a salon, and then find a gentle product I could use at home that would help lengthen the time I could go between coloring appointments. dpHUE Root Touch-Up Kit is more sophisticated than what you would find in the beauty aisle at the supermarket, yet way more affordable than an in-salon single process. Each kit comes with two applications and two sets of everything you need for applying the hair dye (two mixing bowls, two sets of latex gloves, an applicator brush, and two shower caps ... or as they say “processing caps”). You’re also provided with sample-sized color-safe shampoo and conditioner (which you can opt to save for when you travel, like me!).
Applying the actual hair color was foolproof. I had some experience with at-home hair color in my teens, having helped my mom color her hair in the areas she couldn’t reach, but this was the first time I tried it myself. The Touch-Up Kit’s step-by-step instructions left no room for error. You simply mix two products in a bowl, apply using a mini brush that resembles a paintbrush, and then wait patiently for 45-60 minutes before you wash it out.
The only cautionary tale I will share is that you should absolutely use the box the product comes in as your work surface (it folds out), unless you have an old towel or newspaper you can work on top of. I was not prepared for my first time using the product and accidentally stained my sink.
The first time I used the Touch-Up Kit, I washed it out after 45 minutes and was left with approximately 80% coverage. In rereading the details on the dpHUE website, I saw that they suggest you leave the solution on your hair for an additional 15 minutes if you have resistant grays. I waited a few weeks and gave it another shot, but this time I let the solution sit on my hair for 60 minutes. Those extra 15 minutes made all the difference, and all my grays were completely covered.
The bonus? The product is super gentle and didn’t cause any irritation on my sensitive scalp which is super important to me after being diagnosed with AA. And the quality of the color? I’m really impressed by how nice the “dark brown” color option matched my natural hair color. I was originally skeptical and concerned that there are only seven different color options, but the color looks seamless!
Closing Argument: It’s now been 3 weeks since I’ve done the second application and the color has not washed out at all! As someone who is obsessed with my hair (hey, it’s the one accessory we rock every day!), and takes haircare very seriously, I plan to stock up on these kits!
