Dutch minister: cut gas production at Groningen faster

AMSTERDAM, May 22 (Reuters) - Gas production at the Groningen field must be cut more quickly than planned after a relatively large earthquake struck in the far North of the Netherlands, the country's economic affairs minister Eric Wiebes said on Wednesday.

On his way to a debate with parliament, Wiebes told journalists the country, which has been lowering production at the gas field for several years due to the earthquakes it causes, must move more quickly.

He did not specify a timeframe. The Dutch government said earlier on Wednesday the 3.4 magnitude quake might change its current plans to end output by 2030. (Reporting by Toby Sterling, editing by Louise Heavens)
