NEW YORK (AP) -- Stocks are mostly higher in early trading after earnings gains at major U.S. companies including Ford and 3M.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 39 points, or 0.2 percent, at 15,449 after the first few minutes of trading Thursday.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index was flat at 1,746. The Nasdaq composite was up four points, or 0.1 percent, at 3,911.
Ford rose 34 cents, or 2 percent, to $17.86 after raising its profit forecast for the whole year and posting record earnings for the third quarter. Revenue rose 12 percent.
3M rose 60 cents, or 0.5 percent, to $123.85 after its own profit beat the forecasts of Wall Street estimates who follow the company.
