According to UK based Zenith International, a specialist food and drink industry consultancy, during 2015, consumption of flavored, functional and juicy water plus drinks increased 5.7% to 486 million litres. Zenith forecasts that, by 2020, the total flavored, functional and juicy water plus drinks market will stand at almost 800 million litres, an increase of almost 25%.
Additionally, the UK has been discussing levying a "Sugar Tax" on Companies that produce products with excess sugar. UK experts believe a tax of just 7p per regular-sized can of soft drink with added sugar could generate £1 billion per year. New laws are being debated in the House of Commons and a final legislation is expected by this summer. The financial impact to those selling bottled sugar drinks will be enormous.
A new tax could add up to 24p a litre to soft drinks with the highest sugar content, a cost that could be passed on to shoppers through higher prices. The Chancellor has predicted the tax would raise £520m in its first year, far less than cost of the levy.
According to a UK Government Report, "We are eating too much sugar and it is bad for our health. Consuming too many foods and drinks high in sugar can lead to weight gain and related health problems, as well as tooth decay. Almost 25% of adults, 10% of 4 to 5 year olds and 19% of 10 to 11 year olds in England are obese, with significant numbers also being overweight. Treating obesity and its consequences alone currently costs the NHS £5.1bn every year."
