Electronic Arts (EA) is set to release the Mac version of its popular game SimCity on Jun 11. The game will be available through retail outlets and Origin (EA’s direct-to-consumer digital download service).
The PC version of the game, released on Mar 5, received tremendous response and registered more than 1.3 million games sales. Though the game has received a mediocre metacritic rating of 64, we believe that multiple platform releases could work in the favor of the game.
EA has also announced that the customers who had earlier purchased the PC version of SimCity will receive the Apple’s (AAPL) Mac version of the game for free. To make SimCity even more accessible, the game can be played on both the platforms from the same Origin account.
SimCity is one of those popular franchises of EA, which can be played on a number of platforms including mobile. In Jul 2012, EA released SimCity Social for Facebook (FB). We believe that the Mac release will further boost the game’s subscriber base going forward.
We believe that with its variety of titles and massive fan following, EA is better equipped to gain traction in the digital format than most of its peers including Activision (ATVI). Additionally, we believe that EA’s high-quality titles and a robust product pipeline along with increasing online exposure and traction in the social and mobile gaming market will boost its top-line growth over the long term.
However, we remain cautious on EA due to sluggish consumer spending on packaged video games, dismal video game sales are the near-term headwinds.
Currently, EA has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold).
