East Carolina transfer and Mainland grad TJ Lockley commits to Jacksonville State

·2 min read

Mainland High grad TJ Lockley needed less than a month to find his next college football destination.

The 6-foot, 181-pound wide receiver, who entered the NCAA's transfer portal on March 22, committed to Jacksonville State on Tuesday. Lockley redshirted for the 2021 season, his first and only as a member of East Carolina's football program.

Lockley will arrive at Jacksonville State with four years of eligibility remaining. The Gamecocks, who famously upset Florida State last September, will complete a transition from the ASUN (D-I FCS) to Conference USA (D-I FBS) in 2023.

"I saw the whole town and the facilities. They're rebuilding everything," Lockley said. "The area is similar to Greenville (N.C.), where I'm at now.

"They want me to get in the playbook so I can play in the fall. It doesn't matter how big of a school it is, but I like the competition level and the schools they will be playing in Conference USA. I'm just looking to play football at this point."

Selected to The News-Journal's All-Area Offense in each of his two seasons at Mainland, Lockley collected 36 Division I offers in high school. He committed to Illinois in June 2020, but reopened his recruitment a month later and eventually chose ECU.

Lockley led the Bucs with 673 receiving yards and seven touchdown catches in 2019. For his senior year, he moved to quarterback — the position he played for two seasons at Father Lopez — and compiled 1,856 yards from scrimmage and 18 total touchdowns for the Region 1-6A finalists.

"I should be able to fit right in. They run a fast-tempo offense and want to get their playmakers the ball," Lockley said.

Last weekend, Lockley landed an offer while on his official visit to Jacksonville State. He claimed previous FBS offers from Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Eastern Kentucky.
