Long term investing is the way to go, but that doesn't mean you should hold every stock forever. It hits us in the gut when we see fellow investors suffer a loss. Anyone who held China HGS Real Estate Inc. (NASDAQ:HGSH) for five years would be nursing their metaphorical wounds since the share price dropped 81% in that time. While the efficient markets hypothesis continues to be taught by some, it has been proven that markets are over-reactive dynamic systems, and investors are not always rational. By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.
Looking back five years, both China HGS Real Estate's share price and EPS declined; the latter at a rate of 24% per year. This change in EPS is reasonably close to the 28% average annual decrease in the share price. This suggests that market participants have not changed their view of the company all that much. So it's fair to say the share price has been responding to changes in EPS.
The company's earnings per share (over time) is depicted in the image below (click to see the exact numbers).
