Elton John, Neil Patrick Harris, Miley Cyrus, and other celebs react to Australia voting yes to gay marriage
Australians have voted in support of same-sex marriage — and Hollywooders are applauding the decision.
More than 12 million people took part in the government survey and 61.6 percent voted yes, officials announced on Wednesday. While it’s not a done deal quite yet, it paves the way for Parliament to legally recognize the unions of gay and lesbian couples. Malcolm Turnbull, the prime minister of Australia, said it should be legal “before Christmas.”
Celebrities, some of whom are from Australia and some of whom aren’t, had been encouraging Australians to vote yes, so they were excited about the outcome. Elton John, who spoke about the issue numerous times while he recently toured there, thanked Australia for their yes. Neil Patrick Harris, who along with his husband, David Burtka, is BFFs with John and his husband, David Furnish, was so excited that he wants to make the 20-hour trip Down Under. “I just really do need to visit Australia now,” he quipped. Miley Cyrus, who along with her Aussie love, Liam Hemsworth, has been a champion of same-sex marriage (she identifies as pansexual), posted, “Yes!!!!! Congrats Australia! Every step taken is one closer to World Peace! … Proud to be Australian by association.” And Ruby Rose, the Australian actress who identifies as gender fluid, was happy about the result in general, but she thought that the percentage of yeses could have been higher.

I do understand I need to be grateful for the baby steps. But it’s such a mixed feeling to comprehend paying 120 million to ask and see 6/10 people ‘voted’ in support of our community being able to have one part of equality – marriage. In a hypothetical non binding discussion.

But my god thank you to everyone who voted yes. You have most definitely saved lives by this gesture and i know how hard they made it to vote.
