Elvis Presley is an American icon-the face and voice of an entire movement in music, a genre he helped make popular despite lifting it from the black musicians of the South who invented it. But 40 years after his death, who is Elvis Presley for millions of Americans who have seen his image and sound recreated so many times by a numerous artists?

Documentarian Eugene Jarecki seeks out to answer that question with his new film, The King-and he does it by traveling across the country in the 1963 Rolls-Royce owned by the legend himself. Along the way, Jarecki encounters numerous Americans who give their perspectives about the musician's legacy and the state of American in our current time. Among the start-studded talking heads are Chuck D, Alec Baldwin, Van Jones, Dan Rather, Emmylou Harry, Lana Del Rey, and Roseanne Cash.
