Emma Stone and Jonah Hill are freaked-out lab rats in first trailer for Netflix's 'Maniac'

Emma Stone and Jonah Hill made a cute teenage couple in 2007’s coming-of-age comedy Superbad. They’ll again be an intertwined pair in this September’s Maniac — but as the Netflix series’s first trailer reveals, this time around, their relationship will be anything but straightforward.

Directed by True Detective and Beast of No Nation’s Cary Joji Fukunaga, and debuting exclusively on Netflix as a limited-edition 10-episode series, Maniac is a remake of a 2014 Norwegian show of the same name, and concerns two strangers (Hill and Stone) who find themselves participating in a psychological experiment conducted by Justin Theroux’s researcher. Calling to mind Black Mirror, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Total Recall, Sucker Punch, and Alien (to name just a few sci-fi predecessors), the above clip certainly promises mind-bending insanity — which Stone herself aptly dubs some “multi-reality brain magic s***.” Better yet, despite featuring plenty of action involving Hill and Stone in various movie-style guises (which may all exist in their heads), as well as some bizarrely humorous moments featuring Theroux and Sally Field, this full-length trailer maintains considerable mystery about the show’s actual plot — meaning you can check it out without fear of being exposed to unreasonable spoilers.

Co-starring Sonoya Mizuno, Julia Garner, and Jemima Kirke, Maniac debuts on Netflix on Sept. 21.
