Emmerdale star Ryan Hawley has revealed details of Robert Sugden's devastating confession, which airs next week.

Robert finally comes clean with his husband Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) in upcoming scenes, explaining that he could be facing life in prison for his attack on rapist Lee Posner.

Viewers know that Robert has been charged with 'GBH with intent', although he has let Aaron and the rest of his loved ones believe that he has the lesser charge of GBH.

Next week, Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) discovers Robert's deception when he overhears him consulting with his lawyer. Cain makes it very clear that he won't cover for Robert by lying to Aaron.

Robert's day then goes from bad to worse when Aaron's sister Liv Flaherty (Isobel Steele) collapses to the ground at the café and suffers a seizure. Struggling to process the situation, Robert is rooted to the spot and full of fear.

Later at the hospital, Aaron shouts at Robert when he finally reveals he could go to prison for life. Will Robert also be able to share his news with Liv and Victoria?

Speaking at an Emmerdale press day about the emotional scenes ahead, Ryan explained: "Robert's put in a situation where he has to tell Aaron and be honest with him.

"What happens is that Liv has this seizure, which gets in the way. But Robert does eventually confess to Aaron, who's heartbroken and devastated that he hadn't told him."

It's no secret that this storyline is building up to a departure for Robert, as Ryan has decided to leave Emmerdale after five years. However, Ryan admitted that he wants Robert and Aaron to stay together for as long as possible in the meantime.

He said: "I absolutely love working with Danny. We have a great rapport. We make each other laugh. We've said this a million times and we always joke about how we've run out of things to say about each other, but I love working with him.

"When it's not shouting or arguing, it facilitates that jokey atmosphere we have. So I like it when we're together."

Ryan wouldn't talk about his exit from the show at this stage, insisting that it's too early to discuss his reasons for leaving and what it means for Robert. However, he did admit that he has seen some of the online reaction to the news of his exit.

Ryan explained: "I've seen a few things on the internet – people upset that I'm leaving. Robert and Ryan! It's not nice, is it? We want them to be happy, which is why we do this show.

"I think there's something universally relatable about the Robert and Aaron pairing, and I think that's why people like it."

Emmerdale viewers have been left frustrated over Robert's situation in recent episodes, knowing that he was goaded by Lee and his vile behaviour when they had their showdown.

Reflecting on the scenes, Ryan continued: "Robert is a bit shocked by what he's done. Although he was angry with Lee in the build-up to all this, facing the reality of it is a bit different.

"He's worried about how it's going to impact on Aaron and the whole family and their future together. They've been building towards this surrogacy and that could all be ripped away from him.

"But it's his sister that's been violated in this horrific way, and Lee continued to persist in being in their faces. He's an antagonist in every sense of the word. He literally did everything to rile people up, which is great in a soap because it gives regular characters something to work against.

"I can't see any other way that Robert could go about resolving this. But Robert is usually sneaky and manipulative – here, he was less controlled and less measured. Perhaps that's why things got out of control and out of hand.

"Lee was really quite horrible with what he said. It was the last straw and Robert snapped. Lee admitted it and he gloated – it was really quite vile.

"If I was watching it at home and some character said something like this, I'd probably say I'd want to do the same thing!"

Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7pm on ITV, with extra episodes at 8pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
