Enova International's (NYSE:ENVA) five-year total shareholder returns outpace the underlying earnings growth

While Enova International, Inc. (NYSE:ENVA) shareholders are probably generally happy, the stock hasn't had particularly good run recently, with the share price falling 24% in the last quarter. But that doesn't change the fact that the returns over the last five years have been pleasing. Its return of 95% has certainly bested the market return!

Since the long term performance has been good but there's been a recent pullback of 14%, let's check if the fundamentals match the share price.

Check out our latest analysis for Enova International

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One flawed but reasonable way to assess how sentiment around a company has changed is to compare the earnings per share (EPS) with the share price.

During five years of share price growth, Enova International achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 43% per year. This EPS growth is higher than the 14% average annual increase in the share price. So one could conclude that the broader market has become more cautious towards the stock. This cautious sentiment is reflected in its (fairly low) P/E ratio of 4.02.

It is of course excellent to see how Enova International has grown profits over the years, but the future is more important for shareholders. Take a more thorough look at Enova International's financial health with this free report on its balance sheet.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market lost about 20% in the twelve months, Enova International shareholders did even worse, losing 23%. Having said that, it's inevitable that some stocks will be oversold in a falling market. The key is to keep your eyes on the fundamental developments. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 14% per year over half a decade. It could be that the recent sell-off is an opportunity, so it may be worth checking the fundamental data for signs of a long term growth trend. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too. To that end, you should be aware of the 3 warning signs we've spotted with Enova International .
