With EPS Growth And More, Sonoco Products (NYSE:SON) Is Interesting

Simply Wall St

Like a puppy chasing its tail, some new investors often chase 'the next big thing', even if that means buying 'story stocks' without revenue, let alone profit. But the reality is that when a company loses money each year, for long enough, its investors will usually take their share of those losses.

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Sonoco Products (NYSE:SON), which has not only revenues, but also profits. While that doesn't make the shares worth buying at any price, you can't deny that successful capitalism requires profit, eventually. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

How Quickly Is Sonoco Products Increasing Earnings Per Share?

If a company can keep growing earnings per share (EPS) long enough, its share price will eventually follow. That means EPS growth is considered a real positive by most successful long-term investors. Sonoco Products managed to grow EPS by 12% per year, over three years. That's a pretty good rate, if the company can sustain it.

I like to see top-line growth as an indication that growth is sustainable, and I look for a high earnings before interest and taxation (EBIT) margin to point to a competitive moat (though some companies with low margins also have moats). Sonoco Products maintained stable EBIT margins over the last year, all while growing revenue 5.3% to US$5.4b. That's a real positive.

Of course the knack is to find stocks that have their best days in the future, not in the past. You could base your opinion on past performance, of course, but you may also want to check this interactive graph of professional analyst EPS forecasts for Sonoco Products.

Are Sonoco Products Insiders Aligned With All Shareholders?

We would not expect to see insiders owning a large percentage of a US$6.3b company like Sonoco Products. But we are reassured by the fact they have invested in the company. Notably, they have an enormous stake in the company, worth US$122m. This suggests to me that leadership will be very mindful of shareholders' interests when making decisions!

Does Sonoco Products Deserve A Spot On Your Watchlist?

One positive for Sonoco Products is that it is growing EPS. That's nice to see. If that's not enough on its own, there is also the rather notable levels of insider ownership. That combination appeals to me, for one. So yes, I do think the stock is worth keeping an eye on.
