Erik Karlsson gone for four months after foot surgery

The fact that Erik Karlsson played with a damaged foot in the playoffs is remarkable. The fact that he played so well with a damaged foot that he earned a Conn Smythe vote without actually appearing in the Stanley Cup Final is extraordinary.

But at some point, his bum wheel was going to have to be repaired, and that point was Wednesday, as the Ottawa Senators announced their star defenseman will miss “approximately four months” after surgery.

That would put his return right around the start of the 2017-18 season.

From the Sens:

Ottawa Senators general manager Pierre Dorion announced that captain Erik Karlsson had surgery earlier today to repair torn tendons in his left foot.

“Erik underwent surgery earlier today in Charlotte, N.C, to repair torn tendons in his left foot. The tears, which occurred during this year’s Stanley Cup Playoffs, were found during an MRI as part of an extensive medical evaluation following the season.”

“The recovery from this surgery is expected to take approximately four months. This timeline leaves us hopeful that Erik will be fully recovered and healthy to start the 2017-18 regular season.”

Please recall that Ottawa center Derick Brassard is also out 4-5 months after offseason surgery.

Well, it’s official: Erik Karlsson is the best defenseman in hockey even if he spots you torn tendons in his foot.

In a related story, Chris Neil and the Senators are parting ways, which leaves them with a gaping need for another 4-minute-per-night guy that will be credited with having inspired playoff wins.
