ETF Insider: Stocks Continue Bull Run
Another week in the books, and February’s first full week was another strong one. Though there were a few hiccups through out the week, the Nasdaq closed within reach of a 12-year high, and the S&P 500 making yet another high. For now, it seems like each week brings a new record for major benchmarks and investors continue to cheer on the Street’s performance. Though some still hold their reservations, the S&P’s YTD return of more than 6.5% paints the picture of a bull run [see Free 7 Simple & Cheap All- ETF Model Portfolios].
Actionable ETF Trade Ideas
Our picks from Monday’s Insider posted disappointing performance results relative to broad equity benchmarks as our technical goals were not met. Below, we highlight how our trade ideas fared during the week [sign up for a free trial of ETFdb Pro to get actionable ETF ideas every Monday, as well as access to more than 50 all-ETF model portfolios].
Trade #1 Long UUP: Up 1.4%
This fund got off to a solid start this week, but suffered a slight pullback on Tuesday; from there it was all uphill. All in all, we saw a solid gain on the week for UUP. The fund benefited from yet another strong week for stocks as it appears that the U.S. economy is recovering nicely.
Trade #2 Short IYT: Down 1.0%
We stated that this trade was quite speculative and not for conservative traders, and for good reason. Our riskier bet of the week did not pay off, as we expected IYT to feel the pressure of profit-taking after its recent tear. Instead the fund climbed higher throughout the week and eventually tripped our stop-loss of $105 on Friday.
Trade #3 Long TUR: Down 3.3%
We expected TUR to follow its historical trend with a nice bounce off of its support, but the week had other plans in store. After a nice gain on Monday, TUR began to head south, eventually plummeting on Thursday and tripping our stop-loss of $67.
Retirement ETFdb Portfolios
Our retirement portfolios featured a mixed bag of results this week, as some fared well while others struggled. Our 30 Years Til Retirement Portfolio has turned in the best performance over the past four weeks with our 5 Years Til Retirement strategy trailing closely behind.
