EU must make itself ready for expansion, Scholz says

·1 min read

BRUSSELS, June 23 (Reuters) - The European Union should make itself ready for enlargement, now that Ukraine and Moldova will be granted candidate member status, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Thursday.

"We need to set the conditions that are necessary for Ukraine to continue its promising road ahead and at the same time we need to understand that we need to make ourselves ready for expansion", Scholz said before a meeting with EU leaders in Brussels.

Scholz said that in order for a larger union to work, more decisions should be made by majority, instead of requiring unanimity. (Reporting by Bart Meijer; editing by John Stonestreet)
