You'd be hard-pressed in the UK these days to find a restaurant, hotel or otherwise, that didn't offer at least one vegetarian option. But 'you won't perish' is hardly the most inspiring of menu mantras for non meat-eaters - least of all when you're on holiday.
So, to celebrate National Vegetarian Week, we've rounded up five fab UK hotels for herbivores, where you can enjoy activities like vegan cookery classes and feast on hearty veggie breakfasts and dinners with a wealth of choices - not a bland mushroom risotto in sight.
1. The luxury London hotel where you can have a raw vegan afternoon tea
Lancrigg, Grasmere, Cumbria
Lancrigg lies in the Cumbrian village of Grasmere, popular with walkers owing to its Lake District location - and proof that it's not just meaty protein that'll get you up those mountains. Its restaurant is open all day to the general public as well as guests, and a takeover by a dynamic young chef has seen the menu take a turn for the rather inspired.
2. The b&b where even the paint is eco-friendly
La Suite West, London
Come expecting a raw, vegan menu and you won't be disappointed. Come expecting lots of hearty meat dishes and wine – the hotel is alcohol-free – and you likely will be. The menu consists of a selection of small plates – orange and kale salad and raw "bread" with hummus – and mains such as courgette pasta with cashew nut cheese. A vegan afternoon tea with glass of non-alcoholic fizz is also served.
3. The b&b where even the paint is eco-friendly
Cuildorag House, Onich, Scottish Highlands
As well as their Scottish vegetarian breakfasts, Cuildorag prides itself on offering a low carbon footprint holiday to its environmentally conscious guests by growing its own vegetables, keeping its own hens, running off of solar panels and using chemical-free paints and cleaning products where possible.
4. The vegan cookery school with rooms
Our Lizzy, Malvern, Worcestershire
Join Lizzy to learn everything you need to know about making inspired vegetarian cuisine at her cookery school with rooms in Worcestershire. Vegan and gluten-free diets are also covered, and classes range from the seasonal (Autumn Harvest, Christmas) to the international (Indian, Italian and Malvern Mezze). You don't have to make your own breakfast - Lizzy will cook you pancakes or a full veggie featuring 'facon'.
5. The Welsh wonder with views of Snowdonia
Tremeifion Vegetarian & Vegan Hotel, North Wales
For vegetarianism (or veganism) with a view, try Tremeifion in North Wales. Owner Barbara aims to provide an innovative meat-free menu tailored to individual tastes. The hotel also holds special events such as a raw food weekend, and does everything it can to minimise waste - so you can sleep with a clear ethical conscience.
