Facebook to allow employees to work from home through the end of the year

Facebook will allow its employees to continue to work from home through the end of 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The company doesn't expect to open most of its offices until July 6 at the earliest, Facebook confirmed to USA TODAY. However, employees able to work remotely can continue to do so through the end of the year if they choose.

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement to employees Thursday, the company said, adding that they are still evaluating which workers will be required to return to offices when they reopen.

Details of Facebook's plan were first reported by CNBC and The Information.

Facebook was among several companies in March to encourage its employees to work from home to help curb the spread of the coronavirus.

As of Thursday, there were more than 73,000 deaths and 1.2 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the U.S.

Meanwhile, businesses and local governments across the nation continue to navigate how to return to some semblance of normalcy in the wake of the pandemic. Several businesses have begun to reopen in parts of the U.S., with updated guidelines such as enforcing social distancing and increased cleanings.
