Winners and losers

Stocks in the red include Ford as it missed on earnings, cut its outlook, and said restructuring costs could hit $11 billion, TAL Education as short-seller Muddy Waters said the Chinese tutoring company was misleading investors, and alleged profits were fraudulent, and McDonalds – shares dropping despite an earnings beat as fast food chain reported same store sales growth that missed the mark.

Stocks in the green include Supervalu as United Natural Foods will buy the grocer for $1.26 billion, AMD as the chipmaker beat on both the top and bottom lines, noting that it saw a rising demand in its PC business, and Qualcomm – shares jumping as chipmaker beat on earnings, but also walked away from its $43 billion NXP merger. Qualcomm will now use that cash to fund a $30 billion stock buyback plan.
