WASHINGTON & BELOIT, Wis.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Fairbanks Morse, an EnPro Industries company (NPO) and leading provider of solutions that are powering the world forward, has been awarded a contract to build and deliver the Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) sets for two future US Navy nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, CVN-80 (USS Enterprise) and CVN-81 (yet to be named). These ships will be the US Navy’s third and fourth Gerald R. Ford class nuclear-powered aircraft carriers, and the USS Enterprise is the ninth US naval vessel to bear that name. Each EDG set provides mission critical, safety-related back-up electrical power in the event that the ship loses power.
“We are honored to have earned the Navy’s trust over the past seven decades and we are committed to continue earning that trust through the delivery of these EDG sets,” said Deepak Navnith, president of Fairbanks Morse. “The employees at Fairbanks Morse are very proud of our role in providing critical equipment for these ships so the crew can focus on their critical mission of maintaining freedom of the seas.”
The EDG sets will be built at the Fairbanks Morse manufacturing facility in Beloit, Wisconsin. Construction will begin in 2019 and they are scheduled to be delivered in 2023 to Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII)-Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia. Fairbanks Morse will then support installation, commissioning, testing, and sea trials for the vessels.
The US Navy has turned to Fairbanks Morse for over 70 years to provide quality diesel engines for mission critical marine propulsion and ship service power systems. Fairbanks Morse engines are installed on approximately 80 percent of US Navy ships that have medium speed power applications.
