Hong Kong Police Storm University Campus Occupied by Protesters as Courts Overturn Mask Ban

Police cracked down on Hong Kong's Polytechnic University Monday after a days-long siege on the protester-occupied campus spawned some of the most violent confrontations since the anti-government demonstrations began six months ago. Dozens of people were arrested as clashes broke out nearby the university, including several who were seen detained outside a high-end hotel in the city's tourist district of Tsim Sha Tsui (often referred to by it's abbreviation TST).

California Intensifies Fossil Fuel Fight With Drilling Ban

California intensified its battle against fossil fuels by seeking independent reviews of all pending hydraulic fracturing permits and halting approvals of a key production technique in an area that has pumped crude for more than a century. Governor Gavin Newsom ordered regulators to assess the safety of high-pressure steamflooding, a production process that has been linked to recent oil leaks in Kern County, the state's Department of Conservation said in a statement Tuesday. The state is also requesting third-party scientific reviews of any pending applications for fracking, as well as looking for ways to toughen regulations to protect residents near oil and natural gas well sites.

California Won't Buy From Automakers Who Sided With Trump

The California government will bar all state agencies from purchasing any further vehicles from these companies, the New York Times reported. “Carmakers that have chosen to be on the wrong side of history will be on the losing end of California's buying power,” Gov. Newsom said in an official statement on Monday, according to the New York Times. The automakers that intervened on President Trump's behalf in October against a lawsuit filed by environmentalists included General Motors Company (NYSE: GM), Toyota Motors Corporation (TYO: 7203), and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV (OTC: FCAU) among other major companies, Reuters reported at the time.

Soaring salaries at Facebook, Netflix and Silicon Valley giants show where 'the rest' can win

At Netflix Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX), the number is $202,335. Here in Birmingham, thousands of miles away, those sky-high numbers hold potential for the Magic City, where the median household income is just $53,107. While it would be great – and an undoubtedly big win – for Birmingham to reel in major operations for Facebook or Netflix, the sky-high salaries from the ground in Silicon Valley suggests the real gold for Birmingham is in the young startups and the smaller companies that are trying to compete with those global giants If those companies are in Silicon Valley, they're competing for talent with at least nine companies – including Facebook, Netflix and Alphabet – where the median salaries are $200,000 or more.

Morgan Stanley pushes advisers to boost revenue in 2020 pay plan: sources

Morgan Stanley told financial advisers on Tuesday that they could be paid less if they do not generate more revenue or get customers to sign up for comprehensive financial plans next year, people familiar with the bank's 2020 compensation plan said. Morgan Stanley made several changes to the incentive structure, including its 16-tier "pay-out grid" that determines what percentage of fees and commissions brokers get to take home. Some brokers who generate less than $5 million in annual revenue will have to deliver another 10% to reach the payout they received in 2019, according to material reviewed by Reuters.

China Scrutinizes U.S. Bid to Control Chinese Chipmaker

A U.S. chipmaker's attempt to acquire a peer with a valuable Chinese affiliate has spurred concern in Beijing, as tensions between the world's two biggest economies threaten to disrupt the global tech supply chain. China's antitrust regulator is closely monitoring Diodes Inc.'s proposed $428 million takeover of Taiwan's Lite-On Semiconductor Corp., responding to complaints a deal will deliver the Taiwanese company's Shanghai-based affiliate On-Bright Electronics Inc. into American hands, according to a person familiar with the matter. The unusual attention accorded On-Bright -- a Chinese maker of chipsets for power management that's listed in Taipei and has a market value of NT$9.88 billion ($324 million) -- reflects growing scrutiny of American M&A efforts in China.
