The New ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Title Makes This Confusing ‘Harry Potter’ Scene Come Full Circle

Remember that scene in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 where Harry Potter has a vision of Voldemort visiting some dude named Grindelwald? Well, now it finally makes sense.

Yesterday, Warner Bros. released the cast photo and official title of the next Fantastic Beasts film—Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald. The film’s title infers we’ll learn the story of Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp), aka one of the most dangerous wizards of all time, second only to Lord Voldemort. In the cast photo, Grindelwald holds the famed Elder Wand.

So why do Grindelwald and the Elder Wand matter? Follow along and prepare to have your mind blown.

Once upon a time, Grindelwald and Dumbledore (Jude Law) were besties. They made plans to find the Deathly Hallows together and start a wizard revolution to end the International Statute of Wizarding Secrecy. This would form a benevolent global hierarchy that would put the magically inclined above muggles. Alas, the bromance ended when they dueled with Aberforth Dumbledore (Albus’s younger brother) and unintentionally caused the death of Ariana Dumbledore (Dumbledore’s sister). Albus was devastated and, in turn, deserted his whole take-over-the-world plan, leaving Grindelwald to carry out the revolution on his own. Somewhere in the process, ol’ Grindy stole the Elder Wand.

As HP lore has it, Dumbledore and Grindelwald faced off one last time in 1945, and Dumbledore was ultimately victorious. The victor took the Elder Wand for himself, and Grindelwald was thrown in prison, where he was later murdered by Voldemort over said wand.

And just like that, the vision Harry has in Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (see the clip above) finally makes sense. Now we sit back and prepare for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald to arrive on November 16, 2018.

This franchise officially has more drama than The Real Housewives of Atlanta.
