The autumn/winter 2019 catwalk looks are breaking as we speak. As ever, it's been an opportunity for designers to let loose and flex their creative muscles. But, among the mad (glitter galore), the bad (neon eye shadow) and the downright bonkers (feather eyelashes), it's also been a prime opportunity to showcase the best new ways to get glowing skin, smart age your hair or shake up a classic smoky eye. These are our pick of the best ageless looks from the autumn/winter 2019 shows.

Matte red lips and fresh skin

The most elegant way to wear a deep matte lip? With almost nothing else. Paired with fresh looking skin (equal parts moisturiser with foundation), simple eye make-up and slightly structured brows, statement matte lips look ultra modern.

Pin curls and ponytails had us feeling nostalgic

Fendi, Milan

Three days after the news of Karl Lagerfeld's passing, the show at Fendi (where he was creative director for over 54 years) was always going to be somber. But longstanding collaborator, hair stylist Sam McKnight, hoped the hair look he created for the show would pay tribute to the father of fashion. Mcknight's hairstyles featured pin curls at the front (a reference to the 30's decade in which Lagerfeld was born). And, the lengths were pulled into a sleek ponytail at the nape of the neck as a nod to Karl's trademark style. Will we be pin-curling our hair to work? Probably not, but for a swanky evening out? Why not.

Move over Meghan, meet the new messy bun

Remarkably easy to recreate, at Jil Sander, precision went out the window. The messier the buns were, the better. How refreshing. Loosely scooped back into a deconstructed bun at the back of the head, the look was then roughed up around the edges with the front section of hair massaged and loosened to release baby curls framing the face and fronds sticking out of the bun at the back. Paired with a pair of ginormo pair of earrings, this looks particularly chic.

Latex-looking lips are surprisingly flattering

Punchy lips made a statement at Fendi where a latex-looking layer of vinyl gloss coated the models' lips. With skin and eyes kept simple, this extremely shiny lip looked very wearable. To create, make-up artist Peter Philips used Dior's Brilliant Lip Shine in the shade 999. Or try a clear lip gloss over top of a high pigment lip paint or lipstick.

Bringing back the beehive

If you though Ab Fab's Patsy Stone was on to a good thing with her sky-high beehive, you're in good company. This 70's hairstyle just got fashion's seal of approval for 2019, making an appearance at Erdem's London show. A surefire way to cheat volume for thinner, flatter hair, backstage lead stylist Anthony Turner prepped wet hair with L'Oreal's Professionnel Full Volume Mousse. Once dry, he split the hair into a top and bottom half. The bottom half was pulled up into a high ponytail, the top was back-combed to get extra height, then blended with the bottom ponytail and teased back into a messy bun. Done.

Ultra-glowing skin

Victoria Beckham traded boyish brows, or statement lips to concentrate on beautiful, ultra glowy skin. She called on leading facialist, Nichola Joss, to prep all 30 models skin with The Cream by Augustinus Bader to ensure skin was thoroughly hydrated.

Low-maintenance lips

At Oscar De La Renta, pretty rouge-stained lips made an impact. To create, make-up artist Tom Pecheux applied a small amount of garnet-coloured liquid lipstick to the centre of lips, then blended it out toward the edges using a cotton bud and his fingers. The best part? It's extremely low-maintenance to wear. The diffused wash of colour means you won't have to worry about smudging around your lip line or frequent reapplication. Tick tick.

A fresh take on smoky eyes

Tom Ford is known for sexy, sultry-looking make-up , with this season being no exception. However, the brand's trademark smoky eyes were given a modern twist by make-up artist Diane Kendal, who layered rich, metallic cream shadows on top of matte shades (from the Eye Color Quad in Orchid Haze and Nude Dip) to create a fresher, more luminescent finish.

Chic chignons

Backstage at Brandon Maxwell, lead hair stylist Bob Recine used the Dyson Supersonic hair dryer to blow dry hair flat and Aveda's Paddle Brush to divide hair into a severe middle parting, before being tiedinto a low ponytail at the nape of the neck. Next four sections were twisted and pinned back on themselves to create the contemporary squiggle-like, finish.

Over 50's natural

Marc Jacobs, New York

At Marc Jacobs, the designer wanted to celebrate natural beauty, with the models own best features being played up. Fresh skin was the star of the show, with a little liner or mascara to frame eyes and a small dab of blusher and lips left bare other than a swipe of Marc Jacobs Beauty Lip Lock Moisture Balm. And, showcasing the look was supermodel, Christy Turlington, who made her first return to the catwalk in 20 years noting "I turned 50 this year and have arrived at a place where [I thought] 'Why the F not'".

Terracotta cheeks

At Cushnie, pink cheeks were swapped for an altogether more autumnal hue. Terracotta was used to warm skin up and compliment the conker-coloured jumpers and deep berry midi dresses we'll all be wearing. Even better, make-up artist Grace Lee, used just one product - Maybelline's Made For All Lipstick in either Mauve for Me or Spice For Me - to create a wash of colour across eyes, lips and cheeks.

Posh ponytails

To add a bit of interest to standard ponytails, hair stylist Odile Gilbert razzed things up by adding pretty velvet ribbons, jeweled barrettes and delicate floral hair slides (for similar, Anthropologie have a lovely selection). And to keep hair from looking too prim, the style was kept loose, with soft waves dispersed through.
