Father Of Florida High School Student Caught In Mass Shooting: ‘It Was The Worst Nightmare Ever’

Rochelle Nelson

On Valentine’s Day, 16-year-old Naveah was crammed into a closet with her fellow high school students for two hours, hiding from alleged gunman Nikolas Cruz. Cruz is accused of using an AR-15 assault rifle to spray the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida with bullets, killing 17 kids and teachers.

Naveah’s father, Robert, describes what it was like receiving a text message from his daughter telling him that there were gunshots at her school.

“I told her, ‘Naveah, you just keep texting me every 30 seconds. Just keep texting me,’” Robert tells Dr. Phil during Thursday’s show. He says at one point, Naveah’s text stopped coming for as long as five minutes. “As a father, as a parent, it was the worst nightmare ever.”

In the video above, hear more from Robert and Naveah, who knew four of the victims. Hear how she was rescued and taken to safety. And on Thursday, other students at the school share what they experienced during the mass shooting. Check here to see where you can watch.
