Matt Haig> View this post on Instagram> > When I was an adolescent- for a brief but keenly remembered period - I wanted my dad to be different. I wanted him to be more like the other dads I knew in the small market town where we lived. A bit more overtly macho. And less into pink shirts. I wished he was into football and cars and beer rather than wine and theatre and talking about acid rain and the ozone layer. I remember cringing when he once told one of my mates that he was off to his dance class. Now though, I am so thankful I have the dad that I have. A dad who I could talk to about my mental health problems when I had a breakdown. A dad who got me into running (and who can still run further than me). A dad who showed me that there are many types of masculinity. Far more than you find on the front of most Father’s Day cards. A dad who got me thinking about environmentalism when other people thought it was a tree-hugging joke. A dad who quit doing politics at Oxford to study architecture because he loved it. A dad who has been kind and patient and politically interested and who has shown me that growing older doesn’t have to limit you in any way. (He runs or swims six days a week and he and my mum are currently on holiday in Chicago touring all the blues clubs.) A dad to be proud of, who has given me more than he realises. I aspire to be more like him. I know you think Father’s Day is a load of manufactured nonsense but I love you Dad.> > A post shared by Matt Haig (@mattzhaig) on Jun 16, 2019 at 2:13am PDTAuthor and mental health advocate Matt Haig paid a touching tribute to his father on Instagram, calling him a "dad to be proud of".
