A Pakistani airline flew an all-female cockpit on a recent flight, and Twitter is celebrating.

It began on Thursday when Pakistan International Airlines praised a pair of pilots on Twitter. “The flight to Gilgit is very challenging and requires a lot of precision and technique. Our dynamic duo, Captain Maryam Masood and First Officer Shumaila Mazhar make it look so easy as they fly through the mountains celebrating the beauty of our northern areas! Way to go!!” the tweet read.

The airline’s followers are just as proud; the tweet has 11k likes and 3k retweets.

Pakistan is a conservative Muslim country where women have been systematically oppressed. Not only are they are not viewed as equals to men, Pakistan is one of the most dangerous countries for women in the world, according to 2011 Thomson Reuters Foundation poll.

Women aren’t encouraged to work, let alone move up to high-ranking positions. And because of poor education for women, the ones who do work often have a hard time succeeding in the workforce. In 2017, a quarter of women in Pakistan participated in the labor force, according to The World Bank.

Of course, it’s not easy for women in the workforce anywhere in the world, especially female pilots.

Twitter is equally impressed with this progress. Plenty of supporters chimed in to cheer the women on, and to speak of their own experiences flying with the female pilots.

Some confirmed that these women truly earned this opportunity and praise, mentioning that their flights were safe and smooth.

We couldn’t have said it better than this Twitter user: “Hats off ladies. Sky is the limit .”
