JUPITER, FL--(Marketwire -08/20/12)- GelTech Solutions, Inc. (GLTC), creators of FireIce, a revolutionary water-enhancing fire suppressant that has the potential to change current firefighting techniques globally, announced that FireIce was chosen over water and long term retardant to combat the Mount Barney fire burning in heavy timber north of Winthrop, Washington in the Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest.
FireIce was dropped from single engine air tankers (SEATS) and a ground-loaded FireBoss Scooper aircraft. Incident command, the onsite person assigned by the US Forest Service to coordinate firefighting operations, credited the FireIce drops with enabling hotshot crews, smoke jumpers and helitack to put containment lines around the fire.
Unlike other fires in Washington State that have escaped initial attack to grow in size and destroy large areas of wildlands, property and many homes, the Mount Barney fire was contained to an estimated 50 acres. Since the Mount Barney fire, FireIce has been used by airtankers in other areas of Washington State for structure protection.
"Each successful operation confirms and reinforces the viability of our product and demonstrates that using FireIce can improve initial attack results, thus reducing the amount of wildlands and property affected by these devastating fires," stated Joe Ingarra, president of GelTech Solutions. "We are looking forward to the opportunity to continue assisting and serving both federal and state agencies as this fire season continues to prove to be a difficult one for all of the affected states. FireIce's continued performance shows that it is an important tool for fighting wildfires."
