Fiserv (NASDAQ:FISV) Shareholders Have Enjoyed An Impressive 132% Share Price Gain

When you buy shares in a company, it's worth keeping in mind the possibility that it could fail, and you could lose your money. But when you pick a company that is really flourishing, you can make more than 100%. For example, the Fiserv, Inc. (NASDAQ:FISV) share price has soared 132% in the last half decade. Most would be very happy with that. In more good news, the share price has risen 4.1% in thirty days. But the price may well have benefitted from a buoyant market, since stocks have gained 4.5% in the last thirty days.

There is no denying that markets are sometimes efficient, but prices do not always reflect underlying business performance. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Fiserv's earnings per share are down 3.1% per year, despite strong share price performance over five years.

So it's hard to argue that the earnings per share are the best metric to judge the company, as it may not be optimized for profits at this point. Therefore, it's worth taking a look at other metrics to try to understand the share price movements.

In contrast revenue growth of 17% per year is probably viewed as evidence that Fiserv is growing, a real positive. It's quite possible that management are prioritizing revenue growth over EPS growth at the moment.

You can see how earnings and revenue have changed over time in the image below (click on the chart to see the exact values).

We consider it positive that insiders have made significant purchases in the last year. Even so, future earnings will be far more important to whether current shareholders make money. You can see what analysts are predicting for Fiserv in this interactive graph of future profit estimates.

A Different Perspective

While the broader market gained around 19% in the last year, Fiserv shareholders lost 1.3%. However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. Longer term investors wouldn't be so upset, since they would have made 18%, each year, over five years. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Fiserv better, we need to consider many other factors. Consider for instance, the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 3 warning signs with Fiserv (at least 1 which is concerning) , and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
