FLIRSystems Inc. (FLIR), a leader in design, manufacture and marketing of thermal imaging systems, recently received a $16 million order from an Asian government to supply thermal binoculars to support international counter-terrorism efforts.
As per the agreement, FLIR will supply Recon B2-FO integrated dual-channel thermal binoculars, the shipment of which is expected to be completed within a year.
The contract will be included in the Government Systems division of the company, which offers high-performance products for government customers and markets. FLIR will be using Commercially Derived - Military Qualified (:CDMQ) model to design, manufacture and distribute these handheld imaging systems on a commercial basis. The systems have been particularly designed to have an optimum size, weight, power and global supportability.
The products from the Government System division are usually used in definite applications and normally include additional sensors, including visible light cameras, laser rangefinders, laser illuminators and laser designators. The handheld products are usually priced around $30,000.
FLIR has a long-standing business association with this undisclosed strategic US ally in Asia. The recent contract win is a follow-on-order by the customer.
FLIR’s advanced thermal imaging and threat detection systems are used in a variety of applications like airborne and ground-based surveillance, condition monitoring, search and rescue, drug interdiction, navigation, transportation safety, border and maritime patrol, and chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear and explosives (:CBRNE) detection.
The company currently has a Zacks Rank #3 (Hold). Some other companies in the industry that are worth considering at the moment include Astronics Corporation (ATRO), HEICO Corporation (HEI) and Orbital Sciences Corp. (ORB), all having a Zacks Rank #1 (Strong Buy).
