What have they been saying?

Tempers flared on Wednesday morning as Mayweather and McGregor both arrived in Las Vegas ahead of Friday's weigh-in.

Conor McGregor had heated confrontations with both Floyd Mayweather and Paulie Malignaggi at the fighters' grand arrivals.

Mayweather refused to answer questions about his own exchange with McGregor, but the Irishman insisted it arose because, unlike the other fighters on Saturday's bill, they did not have a face-off and offence was taken when he asked why.

"There was a face-off (scheduled), then there was no face-off, and then I saw him and said, 'What, are you afraid of a face-off today?' McGregor explained.

"He didn't say anything, but then the goons, the big goons that he surrounds himself with started pushing and shoving.

"And then it was just a pushing and shoving contest, and that was it. Nothing really happened. I didn't hear what his response was. It just became a pushing and shoving match."

Mayweather has suggested the UFC icon will struggle to make weight come Friday.

McGregor will face a fine if he fails to make the 154lbs light-middleweight limit at Friday's weigh-in.

“I know about fighters,” Mayweather said. “I know every detail of a fighter. I know everything that goes on in their camp.”

"Conor McGregor is extremely heavy right now, I think he's 164lbs, he still has 10lbs to go," Mayweather told FightHype.com.

"He's got to get that weight down, a true champion is disciplined and very responsible but we'll see.

"If he doesn't make the weight we'll still fight but it's going to be a heavy fine."

Mayweather’s advisor, Leonard Ellerbe, confirmed that McGregor would have to pay a financial penalty to his rival if he missed weight.

McGregor reacted angrily to the comments, telling the 40-year-old to 'shut his mouth'.

“He needs to shut his mouth,” McGregor said.

“It is a fool of a thing. Let him keep praying, praying for weight, for fatigue, praying for me to take a backward step. All he is doing is praying, but he is praying to the new god of boxing.”

"My weight is absolutely phenomenal. Tell me one time I have ever missed weight or not performed? Let him think what he wants."

According to UFC sources, McGregor usually weighs around 170 pounds before slimming down in the days leading up to a fight.

Iain Kidd, who works for UFC blog Bloody Elbow, believes McGregor will face no trouble in dropping the required weight.

"I’ve shadowed McGregor’s nutritionist, George Lockhart, on a number of occasions, and I’m privileged to be writing a book on weight cutting with him. I’m going to break down in general terms how a weight cut is performed, and why McGregor being 164 lbs today—if that is his actual weight—is no problem," Kidd wrote.

"On Wednesday, the fighter will drink around 1 gallon of water in the morning, and then have drinks of ice cold water when he’s thirsty throughout the rest of the day.

"On Thursday, his water intake will be restricted. This means the only water he takes in will be small drinks when thirsty, not no water at all. In the evening the fighter will probably do one final workout to deplete the last of the glycogen from the muscles, and then have a hot bath right before bed.

"The fighter should wake up on or close to weigh-in weight on weigh-in day, and any remaining weight will be lost in a hot bath or, if the fighter prefers, a little time in the sauna. With a cut as small as 10 lbs it’s unlikely any weight has to be cut on weigh-in day, though."
