For awhile, it looked like Chennedy Carter’s outstanding freshman season would end on Sunday.

Fifth-seeded Texas A&M trailed fourth-seeded DePaul by 17 points during the third quarter and Carter, the consensus national freshman of the year, had only five points at halftime.

Carter and the Aggies, however, were able to stage the fourth-biggest comeback in the history of the NCAA women’s basketball tournament. Carter scored 32 points in the second half, a push that included the game-winning 3-pointer with just under three seconds left.

Watch the crossover Carter makes (and the defender she sends spinning) just before firing off the shot:

Given Carter’s talent — she averaged 21.9 points per game during the regular season, tops among the country’s freshmen — ESPN announcer Lowell Galindo was right to call her the future face of the sport.

But given the way she played against DePaul, she might also be the face of right now.

The Aggies will advance to the Sweet 16, where they will play the winner of Sunday night’s Villanova-Notre Dame contest.
