Giada De Laurentiis is one of the world's most famous chefs, as proved by her multiple restaurants, nine cookbooks, and her work on shows like Food Network Star and Giada In Italy. But her incredible work ethic, it turns out, was inspired by a family tragedy.

The chef opened up for The Cut's "How I Get It Done" column, and she revealed that her main source of inspiration came from a terrible family loss. As People reports, De Laurentiis lost her brother, Dino Alexander De Laurentiis, in 2003 to melanoma, and it changed the way that she lives her life.

Giada opened up about how Dino's death changed her:

"Taking a break is not the easiest thing for me because I feel like if I’m not doing something then I’m wasting my time. I like to make the most of every second I have. Thirteen years ago my brother, who was two years younger than me and who I was very close to, died of cancer. I realized that life is fleeting and it can be taken away at any time. I feel like I only have a limited amount of time on this planet. I have to get as much done as possible. As sad as that might sound, it’s the truth."

De Laurentiis was very close with Dino, and they even lived next door to each other as adults. "He was the person I turned to for everything," she told ET in 2013. "When something great happened in my life, when something bad happened - I would talk to him 2 to 3 times per day."

One way the chef keeps her brother's memory alive is by visiting a spot overlooking the ocean in Los Angeles. Dino used to spend time there, and De Laurentiis had a bench placed there as a memorial to him.
