Can HNI Corporation's (NYSE:HNI) ROE Continue To Surpass The Industry Average?

One simple way to determine if a company has a good return on equity is to compare it to the average for its industry. Importantly, this is far from a perfect measure, because companies differ significantly within the same industry classification. Pleasingly, HNI has a superior ROE than the average (13%) company in the Commercial Services industry.

Why Western Digital, Turquoise Hill Resources, and Range Resources Slumped Today

Wall Street started the latest earnings season on a fairly downbeat note, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite both seeing small declines even as the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell by a more modest percentage. Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC), Turquoise Hill Resources (NYSE: TRQ), and Range Resources (NYSE: RRC) were among the worst performers. Shares of Western Digital dropped 6% after comments about another major player in the memory space seemed to reflect poorly on it.

Tesla workers say they used electrical tape in Model 3 production

Tesla may have broken its own records, manufacturing 72,531 Model 3 sedans in the three months that ended June 30th. A handful of employees who work in Tesla's open-air GA4 production tenttold CNBC that they used electrical tape to quickly repair cracks on plastic brackets and housings and worked through extreme heat, cold and wild-fire smoke. A Tesla spokesperson told CNBC that the employees' reports were "misleading and do not reflect our manufacturing practices or what it's like to work at Tesla." The spokesperson added that many of the shortcuts the employees claim to have used are not approved and that many parts used in the Model 3 come with electrical tape on them from the suppliers.

Wells shares have now fallen on the day results were reported for the past three quarters, and on nine of the past 10 quarters, and 17 of the past 20.

Here's Why I Think Toronto-Dominion Bank (TSE:TD) Is An Interesting Stock

In contrast to all that, I prefer to spend time on companies like Toronto-Dominion Bank (TSE:TD), which has not only revenues, but also profits. Now, I'm not saying that the stock is necessarily undervalued today; but I can't shake an appreciation for the profitability of the business itself. Loss-making companies are always racing against time to reach financial sustainability, but time is often a friend of the profitable company, especially if it is growing.

Microsoft earnings: Trillion-dollar valuation is banking on continuing cloud growth

Growth of Microsoft Corp.'s cloud service Azure will be key in determining whether the software giant maintains its leading trillion-dollar market cap after its earnings report. Microsoft (MSFT) is scheduled to report fiscal fourth-quarter earnings after the bell on July 18. With Azure revenue rising 73% in the last quarter from year ago levels, and shaping up as the company's fastest-growing segment, investors are concerned whether that pace can be sustained and whether Microsoft can continue to chip away at Amazon.com Inc.'s (AMZN) dominance in the public cloud market.

Musk Stands by His Tesla Appreciation Claim That Was Called ‘Really Dumb’

Musk, Tesla's chief executive officer, first made the claim in a podcast interview in April that the company's vehicles will gain in value because they'll eventually be capable of fully autonomous driving. Quinn Nelson, the owner of a media company that produces videos about tech products, kept engaging Musk in a debate over the claim, which Nelson said “makes no sense.” The CEO replied that Tesla is bundling full-self driving -- or FSD -- into all cars the company builds, and that Tesla will be unable to keep up with demand when the vehicles are capable of complete autonomy. While Kelley Blue Book has handed Tesla a best resale value award for its Model 3, for example, the car-shopping researcher estimates the sedan retains about 69% of its value after three years.

Dividend paying stocks like iStar Inc.
