You may not know that Warren Buffett doesn’t hang out with just CEOs and billionaires. In fact he has a fairly eclectic group of friends, including the likes of Vince Gilligan, creator of “Breaking Bad,” Paul Anka, Kathy Ireland, and the NFL’s Ndamukong Suh.
And then there’s Glenn Close. The award-winning actress was introduced to Buffett by the journalist (and my former colleague) Carol Loomis, at a restaurant in Larchmont, New York some 10 years ago.
Since then, Buffett and Close have socialized occasionally and once even hammed it up together at a Fortune conference performing “The Glory of Love.”
Close, who has attended the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting, previously told me she couldn’t go this year as she is busy reprising her role as Norma Desmond in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Sunset Boulevard” on Broadway.
Still, I wanted to get Close’s thoughts about Buffett and we agreed that it would be a kick to interview Close in character as Norma Desmond—who, if you know the play or the movie, is quite the character. And so I went over to the Palace Theater and sat down with Norma to ask about her dear, old friend Warren Buffett.
In the interview, Norma tells me a long (made up) story about visiting Omaha in the Great Depression and meeting Buffett when he was a small boy. As Norma is wont to do, the story is all about her. In this case, she is the one who suggests Buffett become an investor. (What!?)
In the end I ask Norma if she’s ready for her close-up…
Not surprisingly, she is.
