Glenn Greenwald’s new media venture funded by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar: Report

Laura Hazard Owen

Glenn Greenwald, the blogger who broke the news about the NSA spying scandal, is leaving the Guardian for what he describes as “a once-in-a-career dream journalistic opportunity that no journalist could possibly decline.” BuzzFeed broke that news Tuesday afternoon, but Greenwald wouldn’t say where exactly it is that he’s going.

On Tuesday evening, however, Reuters cited two unidentified sources who said that the new media venture is backed by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar. Omidyar also founded the Hawaiian news startup Honolulu Civil Beat in 2010, and that site partnered with the Huffington Post earlier this year to launch what is now Huffington Post Hawaii.
