Grammys 2023: How Rich Are the Record of the Year Nominees?

The music industry will celebrate its biggest event of the year on Feb. 5 with the 65th Annual Grammy Awards, a night to honor the top performances by singers, songwriters and more.

The stars will pack Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles for the event, with Trevor Noah serving as host for the third straight year. The awards honor achievements in 91 categories, and record of the year is among the most anticipated each year.

Ten artists are nominated for record of the year, with several of them set to perform at the Grammys, including Harry Styles and Lizzo. Grammy winners are often a wealthy bunch, living large on the proceeds of their music, and this list is no exception.

Nominated record title: Don't Shut Me Down

In 1972, Agnetha Fältskog, Björn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad recorded their first song, "People Need Love," in their native Sweden under the name Björn & Benny, Agnetha & Anni-Frid. Two years later, they rebranded to ABBA - an acronym putting together all four of their names.

Net worth: $220 million

Adele - born Adele Laurie Blue Adkins - was raised in London by a single mother who encouraged her to explore her passions. She found it with music, and as a teen, developed a fondness of music from earlier generations, including Ella Fitzgerald. Her mother enrolled in a school for performing arts, and she recorded a demo tape for a class project. When a record company executive heard the songs on MySpace, Adele was signed to a contract four months after her high school graduation.

Well known for her hits "Rolling in the Deep" and "Hello," Adele had 18 Grammy nominations and a remarkable 15 wins through the 2022 awards ceremony. She has seven more nominations this year.

Beyoncé

Nominated record title: Break My Soul

Net worth: $500 million

By the time the 65th Grammy Awards are over, Beyoncé very well could be the answer to this trivia question: Who holds the record for the most Grammy wins? Beyoncé is nominated in nine categories this year, giving her 88 total nominations for her career and 28 wins. The late conductor Georg Solti holds the record for 31, and Beyoncé is tied for second place

with artist/arranger/producer Quincy Jones, according to the Recording Academy.

Her "Break My Soul" also is nominated in the song of the year and best dance/electronic recording categories.

Mary J. Blige

Nominated record title: Good Morning Gorgeous

Net worth: $20 million

Mary J. Blige, whose sound blends hip hop and R&B music, long has been a fan favorite. But it took her a while to feel the love back for herself, she told People, and when she did, she started a new routine. She looks at herself in the mirror each day and says to herself, "Good morning, gorgeous."

And that became the inspiration for her album title of the same name, which has six nominations this year. That brings her career nominations to 37 with nine Grammy wins.

Brandi Carlile

Nominated record title: You And Me On The Rock

Net worth: N/A

Singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile got her start in country music, playing banjo and guitar, but quickly expanded to rock anthems and ballads, according to Popculture. The title track on her 2008 album "The Story" was played in a General Motors commercial during the 2008 Summer Olympics and the album soon hit Billboard charts and the iTunes music store, catapulting her to fame.

"You And Me On The Rock," which features Lucius, is the latest in the string of acclaimed work by Carlile, who has been nominated for Grammys annually since 2019. In all, she has 24 nominations and six wins. Seven of those nominations came this year.

Doja Cat

Nominated record title: Woman

Net worth: $8 million

Doja Cat is a rapper and singer/songwriter whose career owes much to her social media presence on channels like TikTok and Instagram, according to Hip Hop Scriptures. The site contends her career was spurred by the release of the song "Mooo!" which became a viral meme and catapulted her to fame. Her music can be described as "genre-bending."

Doja Cat will be seeking a second consecutive Grammy, winning last year in the best pop duo/group performance category for "Kiss Me More." She's got five chances to win a second Grammy this year, with "Woman" credited with three of those nominations. In all, she has 16 career nominations.

Steve Lacy

Nominated record title: Bad Habit

Net worth: N/A

Steve Lacy has six Grammy nominations in all, including his first in 2015 when, as a high school student, he produced "Ego of Death," nominated in the best urban contemporary album category.

He has four nominations this year, with "Bad Habit" accounting for three of them.

Kendrick Lamar

Nominated record title: The Heart Part 5

Net worth: $75 million

Kendrick Lamar rose to fame as an award-winning rapper and songwriter, signed by Dr. Dre to a recording deal. Much of his work has been influenced by his thoughts of living in Southern California. He has eight Grammy nominations this year, including four in rap categories. In his career, he's been nominated 47 times, winning 14.

In April 2018, he won a Pulitzer Prize for music for "DAMN," and he became the first person to win the prize for a musical work that didn't fall in the jazz or classical genres, according to Biography.

Lizzo

Nominated record title: About Damn Time

Net worth: $40 million

Born Melissa Viviane Jefferson, Lizzo began playing the flute in the fifth grade, and her skill landed her a scholarship to study music performance at the University of Houston, according to Biography. While in college, she performed her own rap music and decided to drop out to pursue that musical path. After years of ups and downs, she contemplated quitting the industry but persevered and struck it big with "Cuz I Love You" in 2019, which reached the Billboard Top Ten. It won best urban contemporary album at the 62nd Grammy Awards - one of three honors that year.

In all, she has 13 nominations, including five this year. After the Grammys, Lizzo will head out on a four-month tour that will take her throughout Europe and the United States.

Harry Styles

Nominated record title: As It Was

Net worth: $120 million

Harry Styles and four other young men were put together by television show judges who wanted to combine their singing talents in 2010, and the result was the band One Direction. Styles launched his solo career in 2017 and put out his second album in 2020. His early works saw him gain three Grammy nominations and one win.

His third solo album, "Harry's House," netted him six nominations this year, with four of them for the track "As It Was."
