Greg Van Avermaet took his first win of the year after the CCC rider outsprinted Diego Ulissi to the line at the end of Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal in Canada on Sunday.

With the French duo of Julian Alaphilippe (Deceuninck-Quick Step) and Benoît Cosnefroy (Ag2r-La Mondiale) gunning for the line from around 2km out Van Avermaet may have thought his chance of a first WorldTour win for over two years had vanished. However, the Olympic champion sat patiently in the bunch watching and waiting before making his move.

UAE Team Emirates's sprinter Ulissi was the first to go, taking with him Van Avermaet who in the end rolled the Italian on the line the win the 219.6-kilometre race in 6hrs 9min 38sec. Ulissi finished runner-up while Iván García Cortina (Bahrain-Merida) was third.

The WorldTour resumes with the penultimate race of the season, the one-day Il Lombardia in northern Italy on October 12.
