Great news for RIT Capital Partners plc (LON:RCP): Insiders acquired stock in large numbers last year

When a single insider purchases stock, it is typically not a major deal. However, when multiple insiders purchase stock, like in RIT Capital Partners plc's (LON:RCP) instance, it's good news for shareholders.

While insider transactions are not the most important thing when it comes to long-term investing, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At RIT Capital Partners

The insider Jeremy Sillem made the biggest insider purchase in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£252k worth of shares at a price of UK£21.10 each. Although we like to see insider buying, we note that this large purchase was at significantly below the recent price of UK£26.30. Because the shares were purchased at a lower price, this particular buy doesn't tell us much about how insiders feel about the current share price.

Happily, we note that in the last year insiders paid UK£272k for 12.74k shares. On the other hand they divested 511.00 shares, for UK£12k. In the last twelve months there was more buying than selling by RIT Capital Partners insiders. We saw some RIT Capital Partners insider buying shares in the last three months. Non-Executive Independent Director Mike Power bought UK£10.0k worth of shares in that time. It's great to see that insiders are only buying, not selling. But the amount invested in the last three months isn't enough for us too put much weight on it, as a single factor.

Does RIT Capital Partners Boast High Insider Ownership?

Looking at the total insider shareholdings in a company can help to inform your view of whether they are well aligned with common shareholders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. RIT Capital Partners insiders own 3.3% of the company, currently worth about UK£137m based on the recent share price. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.

What Might The Insider Transactions At RIT Capital Partners Tell Us?

Our data shows a little insider buying, but no selling, in the last three months. That said, the purchases were not large. On a brighter note, the transactions over the last year are encouraging. Judging from their transactions, and high insider ownership, RIT Capital Partners insiders feel good about the company's future. While we like knowing what's going on with the insider's ownership and transactions, we make sure to also consider what risks are facing a stock before making any investment decision.
