URI vs. SSD: Which Stock Is the Better Value Option?

Looking for broad exposure to the Small Cap Growth segment of the US equity market? You should consider the Guggenheim S&P SmallCap 600 Pure Growth ETF (RZG), a passively managed exchange traded fund launched on 03/01/2006.

The fund is sponsored by Guggenheim Funds. It has amassed assets over $249.81 M, making it one of the average sized ETFs attempting to match the Small Cap Growth segment of the US equity market.

Why Small Cap Growth

Sitting at a market capitalization below $2 billion, small cap companies tend to be high-potential stocks compared to its large and mid cap counterparts, but come with higher risk.

Growth stocks have higher than average sales and earnings growth rates. While these are expected to grow faster than the broader market, they also have higher valuations. Further, growth stocks have a higher level of volatility associated with them. When you consider growth versus value, growth stocks are usually the clear winner in strong bull markets but tend to fall flat in nearly all other environments.

Expense ratios are an important factor in the return of an ETF and in the long term, cheaper funds can significantly outperform their more expensive counterparts, other things remaining the same.

Annual operating expenses for this ETF are 0.35%, putting it on par with most peer products in the space.

Sector Exposure and Top Holdings

It is important to delve into an ETF's holdings before investing despite the many upsides to these kinds of funds like diversified exposure, which minimizes single stock risk. And, most ETFs are very transparent products that disclose their holdings on a daily basis.

This ETF has heaviest allocation to the Healthcare sector--about 26.30% of the portfolio. Information Technology and Consumer Discretionary round out the top three.

Looking at individual holdings, Qualys Inc (QLYS) accounts for about 1.55% of total assets, followed by Enanta Pharmaceuticals Inc (ENTA) and Brooks Automation Inc (BRKS).

The top 10 holdings account for about 14.04% of total assets under management.
