MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA--(Marketwired - May 09, 2016) - H2O.ai, the company bringing AI to business, today announced the appointment of data visualization legends Leland Wilkinson, Tony Chu, Micah Stubbs, Jeff Fohl and Ivy Wang to join chief of technology for applications Prithvi Prabhu. The appointments come at a time of rapid growth for H2O.ai, with the company having recently signed a series of new customers including Macy's, Aetna, PricewaterhouseCoopers and Kaiser Permanente.
Data driven decision making takes courage and teamwork; business interpretation of AI will unlock the technology's true potential. However, interpreting machine-produced outputs can be difficult for non-technical business users. In order for organizations to unlock the technology's true potential they need to be able to pair AI analysis with human-focused interpretation. The interface for that pairing are interactive smart applications that take AI analysis and turn it into digestible insights. H2O.ai has assembled a rock star team of visual designers and UX engineers in order to help organizations develop smart applications.
Leland Wilkinson - Leland is widely renowned in the data visualization community as the author of The Grammar of Graphics, which presented a unique foundation for producing almost every quantitative graphic.
Tony Chu - Tony is well known for his visual machine learning work on R2D3, a project aimed at giving people without a technical background a sense of what machine learning is. R2D3 received a Vizzie from the National Science Foundation. The project was also an honoree in the 2016 Webby Awards and was featured in Gizmodo, Co.Design (Fast Company) and Popular Mechanics.
Micah Stubbs - Micah enjoys exploring data visualization practice and theory at meetups, user groups and conferences. Micah is an active member of the #d3js open source community, and helps organize the Bay Area d3 User Group.
Ivy Wang - Ivy is an interdisciplinary designer that brings her design research and data visualization design background to the H2O.ai brand.
Jeff Fohl - Jeff has had a storied career in design, serving in a variety of roles, including as the principal of his own design business and as creative director, and early employee, of Berkeley-based GTxcel.
Prithvi Prabhu - Prithvi is a visual analytics pro and serves as chief of technology, applications at H2O.ai. Before coming to H2O.ai, he built the exploratory visualization environment at Platfora and founded Plot.io.
"Vertical is the new horizontal. Our largest customers are transforming their businesses with data and AI and nurturing their communities with beautiful data products. Visual experience and the interpretation of AI is crucial for further democratizing algorithms and making them easily accessible," said H2O.ai CEO Sri Ambati. "We're incredibly excited to have such a profoundly creative and talented team to bring design thinking to our customers and community to unlock the true power of AI through visualization."
"Several of my colleagues at Stanford University's Department of Statistics are closely involved with H2O.ai and pointed me in the direction of the company," said Wilkinson. "I was excited to find that H2O.ai is the real deal. This is a company that's deeply focused on developing powerful algorithims that deliver tangible business results. Today Fortune 100 companies deal with terabytes of data every single day and it takes them too long to get results -- they need a better way to explore their data. I look forward to building out a statistical basis for big data visualization, with no need to sample."
"What was clear to me when I joined is the depth of talent at H2O.ai," said Chu. "While I was interviewing every question was about making the product better and more accessible. I'm looking forward to working with Leland, Micah, Ivy, Jeff, Prithvi and the rest of the team to leverage visualization to bring AI to more businesses.
